Reforming and Restructuring Child Welfare Law in New Jersey and Abroad

Thursday, February 10, 2022 | 5:00 PM EDT - 7:00 PM EDT
The symposium will discuss child welfare reform. We will explore the different ways jurisdictions, with a focus on New Jersey, are trying to remedy the inequities and injustices posed by past child welfare practices. We will examine different prevention efforts, kinship care, and the need to think bigger when discussing reform efforts.

Our guest speakers will provide a 360-degree view of the child welfare system and related issues. A speaker from the Department of Children and Families in New Jersey will discuss what the agency is doing to reform their processes. Chief Counsel of the Family Representation Project, who works to prevent removals from poverty-induced circumstances, will provide the legal services point of view. Professor Randi Mandelbaum will provide the family-based point of view, as she deals with the issues firsthand in the Child Advocacy Clinic at Rutgers Law School. Sydney Groll, a former law student at Rutgers and author featured in Rutgers Journal of Law and Public Policy upcoming Spring '22 issue, will speak on a new framework to combat the systemic issues of prejudice and racism in the child welfare system.
